Using matched employer\u2013employee administrative data, it analyses the evolution of workers\u2019 earnings after leaving formal employment. Three years after separation, negative earnings gaps for movers compared with their stayer counterparts are larger than before the separation. Distinct patterns emerge between workers who move directly to a new job and those who experience a period of non-employment. Job-to-job movers see earnings gains, while those with delayed transitions face persistent losses that increase with the duration of non-employment. When controlling for job tenure, these patterns shift: job-to-job movers earn more on average than stayers, and the gap for delayed movers narrows substantially.
